Description:

Red Buy button with a dark background.

High risk confined space may require entry & supervision into a space with:

  • serious access problems and limited ventilation
  • unknown risks – full BA may be used for an initial investigative survey
  • a specified risk that cannot be eliminated or controlled such as entry into a tank containing a toxic substance which cannot be removed
  • a significantly reduced oxygen level.

Tasks will probably be further from the entry point, potentially be more complex, ventilation may be compromised, and breathable air is a primary concern. Entry will probably require self contained (or equivalent) breathing apparatus.

– a rescue plan must be in place and potentially a rescue team will be required.

Course Aims:

To train and assess individuals to safely supervise, enter, work in and exit spaces, which, due to their enclosed nature, their access/egress issues and their specified risk(s) have been classified as level 3 (high risk) confined spaces.

High Risk Confined Space Training – Entry and Supervision

The 1st step to avoiding a trap - is knowing of its existence!

(Frank Herbert - Dune)

The course covers:

  •  Definitions, Risks, and Hazards, Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, and Permits to Work
  • Procedures for Entry, Environmental Monitoring and Ventilation
  • PPE and additional level 3 associated equipment, Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus and
  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Emergency procedures, Practical confined space entry and self-rescue scenarios

The course will enable delegates to:

  •  Identify specified risks and hazards to classify confined spaces
  • Understand confined space risk assessments, safe systems (method statements) and permits
  • Have a sound understanding of environmental monitoring and ventilation
  • Be confident in the use of gas monitoring and detection equipment
  • Understand work restraint and fall arrest, including the use of a harness and lanyard
  • Understand the use of davits, tripods and winches for access and egress
  • Follow procedures to safely enter, work in and exit level 3 confined spaces
  • Use PPE and level 3 associated equipment correctly and safely
  • Be confident in the use of respiratory protection, self-contained and escape breathing apparatus
  • Be able to undertake the role of the confined space supervisor (top person)
  • Understand procedures for and be confident dealing with emergencies

So what does this mean?

This 2 day (initial) course will teach your team the legislation in an easily understandable way, what you are able to do in a high risk and how to set up and supervise the space. (Revailidation is 1 day).

How to deal with emergencies and escape wearing breathing apparatus (like firefighters).

Learn practically in our training rig :- how to gas monitor the space, enter, supervise using tripods, davits and ventilation equipment.

Examples of High Risk Confined Space Entry & Supervision training needs:

High Risk Confined Space Training – Entry and Supervision

A surveyor or archaeologist is often first into a confined space. Despite historical research and environmental (gas) monitoring from the entrance, any hazards found in the confined space cannot be assessed or alleviated until you enter – which exposes the entrant and demands immediate withdrawal…

Access is often limited to a short period of time, so delays to return with a higher level of respiratory protection are difficult and costly.

Entry using breathing apparatus allows protection whilst suspected hazards are confirmed or can be dismissed, air quality can be recorded, and additional control measures can be carried out or implemented.

High Risk Confined Space Training – Entry and Supervision

A maintenance operative needs to enter a pit to shut off a leaking valve.

Previous installation and building changes do not allow the valve to be closed from the surface in this instance.

Despite the gas being non-flammable, it is also displacing the air in the pit – requiring high risk entry wearing breathing apparatus.

High Risk Confined Space Training – Entry and Supervision

An engineer needs to enter spaces where toxic gases or low oxygen levels are a known hazard.

There are organic compounds or processes which cannot be stopped or alleviated.

Breathable air is highly unlikely and breathing apparatus must be worn, at least while initial atmospheric monitoring is conducted to establish the facts or to conduct the task.
